Fireplace Makeover: Any Ideas?

Last night James and I had a lovely dinner with friends in their Centerport home. Over the course of the evening, the aesthetics of their fireplace came up. The house is furnished with a cool mid-century vibe, so the heaviness of the fireplace seems out of place. We batted around a few ideas, and I even rendered the idea of simply painting the mortar white, but I throw it out to you-- my very wise readers-- to add some ideas into the mix. Have any of you ever update a dated fireplace?

Cover the bricks - stacked stone, mosaic, slate or (my favorite) steel panels over cement board and replace the fireplace itself with one of these. Candice Olsen did a glass covered fireplace that was gorgeous but may be too modern for this application.
