La Famiglia
1959. My father, far left, age 14. The Palumbo and Salamista families lived on North Elliot Place in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. The entire family. The cousins, the aunts, the uncles, the brothers. In tenements above store fronts, the family marked time based on house numbers. "Oh, that's when we lived at 19." "Later we moved to 21." As they moved up, they moved out. There was so much gained in the move, and yet, there was something lost. The connectedness of the family in this photo is something that we need to work towards preserving.
